============================== README.TXT =============================== Welcome to the May 1999 Linux Slackware 4.0 CDROM, disc 3! ---------------------------------------------------------- This CDROM contains the installation files for Slackware 3.9 (a conversion of the Slackware 4.0 system to use a 2.0.x kernel), the GNOME 1.0 desktop, and the GNU archives from prep.ai.mit.edu. Why release a Slackware 3.9 when Slackware 4.0 is already available? Because of its proven stability, some people may want to use this kernel instead of the newer 2.2.x kernel used by default in Slackware 4.0. Slackware 3.9 contains libc 5.4.46, the 2.0.37pre10 Linux kernel from Alan Cox, (plus source for many other versions in the source tree, including version 0.01 :^) and XFree86 3.3.3.1. This system uses and builds libc5 binaries by default, but supports running glibc2 and old a.out binaries as well. You can use the MSDOS view program to browse the files on this disc. The view program also contains our full-word search program. The full word search program will instantly find a search word in any file on the disc. There are also Unix binaries (including linux) for the search engine in \utils. ========================================================================== Here is a list of some important files and directories of the disc.
